The ADHD Packing Trap (And Why Regular Advice Fails)
Every generic moving guide says things like: "Pack room by room and label your boxes." Thanks, very helpful. What they don't tell you is what to do when you start packing the bedroom and suddenly you're reading old letters from 2009 for 90 minutes.
ADHD packing fails for three specific reasons:
- Every item triggers an emotional response or memory — suddenly you're not packing, you're reminiscing
- There's no clear "done" — how many boxes is enough? When is a room "packed"? Ambiguity kills ADHD momentum
- Hyperfocus pulls you sideways — you'll pack the same drawer 3 times but forget the entire closet
The solution isn't willpower. It's structure. Here's the full ADHD packing system.
Step 1: Set Up the Color-Code System (Before You Pack Anything)
This is the single most impactful packing decision for ADHD brains. Do this FIRST, before you pack a single item.
Assign each room a color
Buy colored dot labels from Amazon or any office store. Assign: Red = Bedroom, Blue = Kitchen, Green = Bathroom, Yellow = Living Room, Orange = Office, Purple = Garage.
Make a room map for the new place
Draw a simple map of your new home and tape a matching color dot on each room. Movers (and you) will instantly know where every box goes.
Label the top AND one side of every box
Boxes get stacked. If you only label the top, you can't read the label when it's in a pile. Top + side = always readable.
Number your boxes per room
Kitchen Box 1, Kitchen Box 2, etc. If Kitchen Box 3 is missing on moving day, you'll know immediately. ADHD brains lose things. Numbering prevents it.
You need: colored dot labels (round stickers), large markers, boxes in multiple sizes, clear tape, and bubble wrap. Order all of this in one Amazon order before you start packing — decision fatigue mid-pack is a disaster.
Step 2: Create Your Can't-Lose Box (Do This Before Anything Else)
This is the most important box you will pack. It never goes on the moving truck. You carry it. Personally. Always.
| What Goes In Your Can't-Lose Box | Why |
|---|---|
| Daily medications (30-day supply) | Can't function without them, can't replace them quickly |
| Phone charger + laptop charger | You'll need these immediately and constantly |
| Passport / ID / Social Security card | Irreplaceable documents |
| Laptop or tablet | Work, entertainment, accessing the planner |
| One change of clothes | Moving day gets sweaty and messy |
| Snacks + water bottle | ADHD + hunger = meltdown |
| Cash + credit cards | Tips for movers, emergencies |
| Moving paperwork | Mover contract, new lease, utility contacts |
Label this box "OPEN FIRST — GO-BAG" in red marker. Put it in your car or carry it in your hand. Do not let it go on the truck.
Step 3: Create Your "Open First" Box
This is separate from the go-bag. This box gets loaded LAST on the truck so it comes off FIRST. It contains everything you need for your first night in the new place:
- Toilet paper — trust us, you'll need this immediately
- Hand soap
- Towels (1 per person)
- Bedding (sheets + pillow)
- Coffee maker + coffee (or kettle if you're a tea person)
- One set of plates, mugs, utensils
- Phone charger (backup)
- Trash bags
- Paper towels
- Basic toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant)

Step 4: Run Focused Packing Sessions (Not Marathon Days)
The #1 packing mistake ADHD brains make: trying to have a "big packing day" and doing everything at once. This leads to complete overwhelm, nothing packed, and self-loathing.
Instead: Run focused packing sessions.
One Room Per Session
Never try to pack multiple rooms in one session. Decide before you start: "Today is Kitchen Day." That's it.
25-Minute Pomodoro Bursts
Set a timer for 25 minutes. Pack until it rings. Take a 5-minute break. Repeat. After 4 sessions, take a longer break. The timer removes the "but when do I stop?" paralysis.
Stop at the Timer, No Matter What
ADHD brains resist stopping when in flow. But stopping honors the system. And the system is what makes moving possible.
Room-by-Room Packing Order
This is the optimal order to pack your home with ADHD — designed to keep motivation high and avoid the paralysis that comes from packing items you still need:
Storage / Attic / Basement First
These items are already out of daily use. Easiest room to pack, quick win, builds momentum.
Seasonal Items
Out-of-season clothes, holiday decor, sports equipment you're not using. Zero daily impact to pack now.
Books, Media, Decor
Books are heavy — pack them in small boxes only. Decor can be wrapped in clothing to save on bubble wrap.
Spare Bedroom / Office
Pack the spaces you use least. Leave your main workspace functional until the last possible day.
Living Room
Decor, extra blankets, entertainment items. Leave the couch and main TV until last.
Bedroom
Pack clothes except one week's worth. Leave bedding until the night before you move.
Kitchen Last
You need to eat. Pack kitchen appliances and specialty items first. Dishes and daily cookware last — the morning of your move.
The color-code system transforms chaos into order — one room at a time.
ADHD Packing Mistakes to Avoid
Don't: Pack by category (all books, then all clothes) — you'll hyperfocus on finding every book in the house for 3 hours. Pack by room instead.
Don't: Wait for "perfect boxes" — any box that closes and isn't wet works.
Don't: Pack while watching Netflix — you'll end up watching 4 episodes and packing nothing. Podcasts or music only.
Don't: Let sentimental items derail you — take a photo, put it in a "Decide Later" box, keep moving.
