The Somatic Storage of Stress

When the brain processes a threat, it prepares the physical body to act—either to fight or run. This preparation triggers muscle tension, particularly in the psoas, shoulders, and jaw, as well as modifications in fascia and posture. In a healthy survival cycle, the physical action (fighting or running) releases this stored energy, returning the body to a relaxed state. In modern chronic stress, however, we rarely engage in physical action, leaving this defensive energy stored as chronic muscular tension.

Somatic psychology and research in physical therapy show that chronic stress leads to changes in fascia—the connective tissue wrapping muscles and organs. Fascia becomes thick and rigid under high cortisol levels, restricting movement and trapping metabolic waste. This physical tension acts as a constant signal of threat to the brain, maintaining a state of low-level anxiety and preventing recovery.

Releasing Stored Defensive Energy

To release stored tension, we must engage the body directly. Somatic experiencing, shaking therapies, and myofascial release help reset the motor patterns associated with stress. By physically releasing tension, you signal to the brain that the threat has passed, allowing the nervous system to settle.

Daily somatic exercises—such as gentle shaking, psoas releases, or targeted stretching—can help prevent the accumulation of chronic tension. Incorporating these physical releases into your routine supports autonomic regulation and helps prevent stress from building up over time.
